Vactical Entertainment Interview

Vactical Entertainment was nice enough to participate in our interview.  Not only are they nice people, they produce some of the best GB games in the country.  These questions were kindly answered by Oliver Miyashita, Vice President, Development, and Paul Sickles Vice President, Marketing Vatical Entertainment.  Check it out.

GB Online: Vatical Entertainment has produced some quite popular Game Boy games.  How long has Vactical been in the spotlight?

Vactical: Vatical was formed in January 1999 from its sister company Microware which had been working with exclusive distribution rights on many titles.

GB Online: The company name Vactical Entertainment sounds sophisticated. What does the name Vatical even mean?

Vactical: Vatical: [Lat.vates,seer.]: Of or relating to the foretelling of future events by or as if by supernatural means.

GB Online: Vactical's games for Game Boy are very much of a variety and are released close together.  How many groups does Vactical have to produce their games?

Vactical: Vatical is continuing to build its organization but on the titles previously released, they were produced by a single team.

GB Online: A majority of your games, even your coming games, seem to be activities that the normal person can perform (examples: Deer Hunter, Zebco Fishing, Bowling, Pro Darts) as opposed to norm of super hero and versus mode games. Why is this?

Vactical: We're not "opposed" to super hero or versus mode games (we did release Catwoman from DC Comics for CGB). It really depends on what opportunities we have at the time.

GB Online: In the future will any of your games consist of first person shooter games such as Quake?

Vactical: Vatical is proud of our "fun games for families" policy, and has no plans to release any FPS games.

GB Online: Vactical released a game called Deer Hunter.  Are your game designers big hunters?

Vactical: We like to bring outdoor sports and activities to the gaming market - if you have to be stuck indoors (in a car or plane) why not at least be able to vicariously participate in stalking big game or racing Polaris Snowmobiles?  As for our staff being big hunters, we have a Russian Product Manager here who is a big beer hunter, but I don't think that counts.

GB Online: Who decides which game titles will be made?

Vactical: This is a concerted team effort with evaluation, feedback and input from Product, Marketing, Sales and Executive departments of Vatical.  We also flip a coin for added due diligence and if that doesn't work we use the Ouija board!

GB Online: What should the average Game Boy fan expect in the near future from Vactical Entertainment?

Vactical: As you know, Vatical is a recognized leader in the Game Boy market, and we plan on more bringing fun and innovative titles to gamers-on-the-go.

GB Online: Is your company going to change any of its tactics with the release of Game Boy Advance?

Vactical: Vatical is actively researching Game Boy Advance titles for development.  With the advent of Internet and network connection capabilities, we are anticipating a wide variety of innovative game features and elements that will add multiplayer fun and replay value to our titles.
